I was driving this morning thinking about the direction I wanted to take this writing thing. I was asking myself questions like “Screw it, I’m just gonna lob scuds and tell people what I think”. I quickly realized that the only people who “care” about what I think have already heard countless monologues on this and that time and time again. While I continued driving a song came on that almost spoke to me in that very moment.
A song that never really did it for me, but resonated quite deeply with me on my short morning drive. You see, I’m not interested in talking with ideologues who’s profound beliefs and a keen sense of loyalty to ideas, projects, and policies hinder them from any constructive dialogue that would require one’s own thoughts to formulate a belief they take ownership of. Rather, I want to know what people think about things that draw us away from mindless chatter and helps us cope with the stark reality that most of us just want a break.
A break from reality or one’s own perceived reality. We want to know if people long for the things you think about while driving home from work. Do people really miss watching 90210 or do they miss that moment of being in junior high school, not middle school, and the feeling they get from those memories? We all as adults have to look forward. Be it work, family, finances, or just part of being an adult. But deep down we all have a strong yearning to harken back to times in which life was just better. For some of us that was just a year ago. Others go farther back then some, but the feeling is still the same. We all cling to moments in time that are nostalgic.
So this is what it will be. Thoughts and ideas both good and bad on things that shaped us into the people we are today. Each and everyone of us got direction from our parents, music, politics, religion, sports, and so on and so on. These experiences, be it good or bad, shaped us to be the person we allow others to see everyday.
Please consider following by subscribing to the newsletter if any of this sound interesting.
MUSIC. All forms of music from the past 40 years. I enjoy all music, but for the purposes of the theme of this site, I want to keep it on things I remember.
ENTERTAINMENT. Movies and TV programs. This includes Saturday morning cartoons and TGIF on ABC.
FADS/ FASHION. Things from Hypercolor shirts to Hammer pants. Rolling your jeans to Starter jackets. Even the Pog’s and Garbage Pal Kids cards will get a shoutout.
POLITICS. From Regan to Clinton. Policy changes and government programs like “The War on Drugs” and NAFTA circa 1994. Might even touch on the good ol’ “Assault Weapons Ban” of 1994. Bubba was busy in 94. And yes, we can get into “Bubba’s thing” as well.
AFTRENOON TALK SHOWS. Train wreck to follow.
RELIGON/ CULTS. Although some could argue that one is a synonym for the other, the impact these two things had were huge.
GRAB-BAG. For those that remember buying into that scam called a grab-bag from the sketchy pedophile pretending to be an ice cream man know what this is. Leftovers.
I will be looking at how these things not only shaped the world, but they also shaped us and in the end, how we chose to see the world. I will be sending out news letters 4-5 times a week. I would enjoy reading your thoughts and ideas for other content in the comment section. I was told the section in the original news letter for comments was not allowing for people to leave comments. I’m still new to this so please be patient with me as I try and figure this out. Thanks again.
SIDE NOTE
For those of you who are or were expecting me to take more of a hardline stance on things or individuals I say this, once I get comfortable with this format, I might go towards that on a page set aside for that. I just don’t feel I need that or that anyone else wants that right now. That might change after the first 100 days. Until then, I’m just gonna try to get peoples mind elsewhere.
Great blog. I know I miss the good ‘old days and it seems like I can never get back what I once had. Newer versions of the old shows are not what I remember them to be (I’m looking at you Saved by the Bell).
As the world seemed to be in chaos last fall, my husband and I signed up for Hulu to watch Animaniacs. We felt we needed a good laugh. Maybe it was because of everything around us, but we just didn’t laugh like we remembered.
But yet I still love those things- or at least the ideas I think. Seems like it’s time to break out the 90s trivial pursuit.
